Two large circular plugs have been used to remove and repair knots in the timber, left deliberately visible as part of the construction.\u003cbr\u003e\nEnd grain is particularly suited to chopping boards, allowing a knife edge to move between the vertical wood fibres rather than repeatedly cutting across them.
